28th September 2026, London, UK – Balloon One, the technology partner optimising global supply chains, is working with Albion Fine Foods, a wholesale food distributor, to increase efficiencies across the warehouse through its ProFresh platform. Since going live with ProFresh in 2024, Albion Fine Foods has seen wastage running at less than 3% and reducing steadily as volumes have grown.
When Albion Fine Foods first implemented ProFresh across its warehouse, it was running fresh produce volumes of £3 million, and it knew one of the issues to address was the complexity that comes with handling this fresh produce. For example, a chef ordering from Albion Fine Foods could request 1x16kg bag of flour for the week while also needing 3 punnets of strawberries a day, which places strain on complex processes unable to work with multiple units of measure, products in different case sizes, and produce without barcodes coming directly from farms.
ProFresh is providing Albion Fine Foods with instant visibility, making it easier for supply chain managers to see what stock is available and what’s needed. Quality control teams can adjust stock on the system and this figure is reported to give an exact value on wastage – simplifying the process required to reduce food waste across the warehouse.
Toby Raphael, General Manager at Albion Fine Foods, said, “Fruit and vegetable orders look completely different from our traditional orders as there are more lines and smaller individual quantities and values. ProFresh provides us with instant visibility across the warehouse, ensuring the cold store team, planners and suppliers all have access to the same information in real-time, making it far easier to see what we have and what we need. ProFresh has enabled us to grow our fresh produce revenue from £3m per year to £9.5m per year in the 30 months since go-live, and we are on course to increase total fresh produce volumes to £13m over the next 12 months.”
ProFresh has also enabled picking and packing to speed up considerably; orders are visible in the work centre, sortable by route, size, volume or weight, and can be easily allocated to individual pickers as they can see orders on tablets in line with the layout of the picking area. This has been key to Albion Fine Foods improving efficiency in the workflow process, and as a result, picking accuracy has risen to over 99.5%, with the operator currently picking over 4,000 lines per night. The cost per line picked has reduced by around 30%, with capacity for volume throughput that would not have been possible without the system.
John Burgess, Director of Innovation at Balloon One, said, “The improved numbers Albion Fine Foods is seeing tell the story better than we could. They show what’s possible when a system is built around how fresh food actually moves, especially at a time when unpredictable weather conditions are causing challenges for fresh produce operators with managing supply and demand. Albion Fine Foods has now been able to take everything it has learnt from the last two and a half years of live data, putting this knowledge back into the hands of its planning and warehouse teams.”
Balloon One’s work with Albion Fine Foods has been recognised externally as the companies have been shortlisted for the Kite Packaging Supply Chain Innovation Award at the 30th Supply Chain Excellence Awards, taking place at Grosvenor House, London, on 5 November 2026.
